Bucknell closes out fall season at the Nittany Lion Chase

This past weekend, the team concluded its fall season at Bald Eagle State Park where it competed in the Nittany Lion Chase, an annual regatta hosted by Penn State. Competition included Penn State, La Salle, and Susquehanna University.

The format of this regatta differed from usual fall racing, as each race spanned over 2000 meters in sprint fashion rather than 5000 meters in head race style. For the upperclassmen, sprint racing was nothing unfamiliar, but for the freshmen, this weekend served as a small taste of what lies ahead.

The pair marked the first event of the day and included four Bucknell entries. Finishing first by a large margin of open water were Matt Dain ’22 and Davis MacKelcan ‘22, followed by Matt LaRouche ’20 and Alex Herman ’20 in second, and Bobby Subak ‘21 and Jackson Ingram ‘21 in third. After meandering their way down the course with trouble steering, Nick Caravias ‘22 and Christian Sieck ‘22 finished fifth.

The next event was the freshman eight. With the exception of two experienced rowers in each freshman boat, the lineups were comprised of novice rowers with just two months of rowing under their belt. Finishing first was the Bucknell A entry followed closely by Bucknell B in second and PSU in third.

Next were the fours. In the varsity four event, Bucknell A placed first and Bucknell B finished fourth. In the freshman four event, Bucknell placed first with a combination of rowers who up until Sunday hadn’t previously rowed in anything smaller than an eight.

Concluding the day were the varsity eights. Despite a boat-stopping crab halfway through the race, the Bucknell A entry pushed forward to win the event with the Bucknell B and C entries finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Thank you to all of the parents who came out to support the program this weekend, and especially those who helped organize hospitality!
